Autodesk Fusion 360 CAD/CAM/CNC: Make an assembly wallet

Requirements
  • No prior knowledge of Fusion 360 is required. Fusion 360 will run on a PC or a Mac-based computer. A three button scroll-wheel mouse is recommended. Access to the internet while using Fusion 360 will be necessary to save files and perform cloud renderings.
  • Download and install Fusion 360.
  • (Optional): Access to a CNC milling machine.
Description

In this course, we’ll create an assembly wallet for an online retailer whose research shows a declining use of paper money by Generation Z. This retailer also saw a trend in DIY minimalist wallets, indicating that Gen Z folks carry just a few credit cards. In this scenario, IMPACT.Design has recruited you and provided criteria to design and manufacture a minimalist wallet for Gen Z as a two-piece precision assembly with fasteners.

As a second challenge, we’ll use your newfound abilities to design your own wallet and then compete in a design challenge with your class.
After completing this course, students will:

  • Explain and apply sustainable design methodologies to the design process.
  • Create two solid models from a single sketch.
  • Add a chamfer to both components.
  • Use the sketch constraints to reduce the need for dimensions.
  • Reduce redundant work by replicating features.

Contents and Overview

This course consists of 10 sections that include lectures and hands-on exercises using Fusion 360. Each lesson includes comprehensive lecture presentations and project exercises that include step-by-step video instruction, project resources and datasets, and a final course assessment.

At the beginning of the course, we’ll apply design for manufacturing principles to the design of an assembly wallet. Step-by step video tutorials guide you through the process from sketch to documentation. We’ll then use Fusion 360 CAM to set up and program the assembly wallet CAD model for successful manufacture.

Once we’ve reviewed manufacturing best practices, we’ll overview of the CNC setup and machining for an assembly wallet. We’ll then step through the inspection process to ensure accuracy in our design.

At the end of the course, you’ll take a course assessment that demonstrates your expertise and shows you where you might need more practice. The skills in this course will help you apply design and engineering concepts and practice real-world scenarios that you may encounter in the design process.

Who this course is for:
  • Anyone interested in the design-for-manufacturing processes: Computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer numeric controls (CNC).
  • Beginning students interested in machining, milling, as well as additive and subtractive manufacturing.
  • Students looking for a project to practice their CAD, CAM, and CNC production skills.
