The fundamentals of SEO

Search Engine Optimization, or commonly referred to as SEO, is focused on growing visibility in organic (which means non-paid) search engine results. An SEO specialist uses both, technical and creative elements to improve rankings, increase awareness, and drive traffic to the websites. Most users mainly use search engines to navigate on the Internet (Google, Yahoo, Bing), so search engines provide targeted traffic, i.e., people looking for what you offer. This course starts with the introduction to SEO, explaining how search engines work, how they discover and evaluate pages on the Internet, what website owners can do to be found and which practices are considered illegal and are likely to be penalized.

The course then introduces keyword research as the foundation for understanding how your business or product should and can be positioned in the digital space for it to be visible by and rank high on search engines. This part explains concepts such as long tail keywords and ad groups, presents some of the most common keyword research tools and their limitations, and gives a framework to think about keywords in the broader spectrum.

In the last part of the course, the focus shifts to link building, which is essential for any website to be discovered and crawled by search engines. Though in general link building requires a lot of research and creativity, the course presents some basic ideas and tactics for link building campaigns that can be implemented quite easily and serve as a stepping stone for further visibility online. This section reviews the importance of good content as a starting point to link building, some basic owned channels (social media, profiles on various platforms, etc.) that can be readily utilized for own SEO benefit, offsite and onsite page linking tactics, as well as outreaching and building relationships with external partners.
