Product design goes beyond how a product looks. Industrial designers need to know how a product actually works. CAD software is an essential tool used by industrial designers to explore both form and function of design ideas. In this project, you will learn how to use Fusion 360, 3D CAD/CAM software, to design a teakettle inspired by the iconic Alessi MJ33 teakettle design by Michael Graves. The project includes everything you need to learn CAD to explore your design ideas: step-by-step video instruction, Fusion 360 software, and software datasets. Get started and enroll today!

Concepts covered in this course are:

  • Modeling: parametric solid modeling and freeform modeling.
  • Sustainable design practices: green material selection, friction, whole systems, and product lifecycle.
  • Collaboration: live design review, sharing design information.
  • Simulation: design validation–the safety factor, stress, and deflection on the handle.
  • Visualization: assembly animation and photo-realistic rendering.
  • Documentation: technical part documentation.
  • Manufacturing: exporting to an STL file for 3D printing and g-code generate for CNC.

Contents Overview

This course contains over 11 lessons outlining how CAD is used in the industrial design / product design process. Over 2 hours of step-by-step video based instruction and supplemental print resources to guide you through modeling and manufacturing a teakettle. No prior experience using CAD/CAM is required. This course offers project based learning for anyone who wishes to learn how to use Autodesk Fusion 360 software to develop a product design from concept to manufacture.

This course starts with a course overview summarizing the course benefits and the project design goal, creating a teakettle. Next, the Fusion 360 introduction walks you through downloading the software, navigating the user interface, and key features of the software. A quick practice exercise has you apply these skills by creating and rendering a simple shape in Fusion 360.

Using Fusion 360 sketching and modeling tools, you apply both parametric and freeform modeling techniques to design the tea kettle parts. Your design process incorporates sustainable design practices to ensure that you are thinking holistically about material choices, reducing friction, and the whole product lifecycle.

You refine your design based on feedback you collected utilizing Fusion 360 cloud based collaboration features for live design review and feedback.

After implementing your design refinements, you complete a simulation to validate your design to determine the safety factor, stress, and deflection on the handle when the user is lifting and pouring from the teakettle. You finish the design process by documenting the design, creating an animation of the teakettle assembly, and create a photo-realistic render of your design for presentation.

By the end of this course, you will have mastered an introduction to Fusion 360 and the design process preparing you to design and manufacture any product design idea – the teakettle is just the start.
