Requirements
No prior knowledge of Fusion 360 is required. Fusion 360 will run on a PC or a Mac-based computer. A three button scroll-wheel mouse is recommended. Access to the internet while using Fusion 360 will be necessary to save files and to also perform cloud renderings.
Description
This course introduces you to Product Design: Innovative Packaging tailored for product and industrial designers. With a focus on improving an existing product form, function, and sustainability, Product Design: Innovative Packaging explores leading-edge opportunities for the design of a new second life detergent packaging solution. The course emphasis is on gaining a deep understanding of how second life packaging innovation can be achieved and reviews all phases of the design and development process: materials, manufacture, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability to defining design criteria, idea generation, prototype development, testing and refinement, and final presentation.

Using Fusion 360 as the 3D CAD/CAM tool to model and develop a second life packaging solution, you will be able to quickly generate sketches for review and feedback, streamlining the design reiteration process to create and present innovative packaging solutions. Let’s get started!

Concepts covered in this course are:

Principles of design innovation: ideation, prototyping, refinement, and presentation.
Fusion 360 parametric solid modeling and freeform modeling to create a second life concept design for a laundry detergent bottle.
Second life packaging as a form of innovation.
Blow molding process and limitations.
Four aspects of sustainable design including product lifecycle analysis, whole systems thinking, green materials, and second life packaging.
Collaboration: cloud based sharing and live review.
Make: generating a STL file for 3D printing.
Documentation: technical drawings.
Visualization: photo-realistic rendering.
Contents and Overview Contents and Overview
This course contains 8 lessons outlining how Fusion 360 CAD/CAM is used in the industrial design and product design process with specific emphasis on innovative second life packaging. One hour of step-by-step video based instruction and a supplemental print resource guide you through the design process and Fusion 360 software. No prior experience using CAD/CAM is required. This course offers project based learning for anyone who wishes to learn how to use Autodesk Fusion 360 software to develop a product design from concept to manufacture.

This course starts with an overview summarizing the course benefits and the project design goal, creating a second life laundry detergent bottle. Next, the Fusion 360 introduction walks you through downloading the software, navigating the user interface, and key features of the software. A quick practice exercise has you apply these skills by creating and rendering a simple shape in Fusion 360.

Using Fusion 360 sketching and modeling tools, you apply both parametric and freeform modeling techniques to design the packaging bottle. Your design process incorporates sustainable design practices to ensure that you are thinking holistically about material choices, reducing friction, and the whole product lifecycle. You apply principles of design innovation through the process. Next, you refine your design based on feedback you collected utilizing Fusion 360 cloud based collaboration features for live design review and feedback.

For final presentation, you use Fusion 360 to create technical drawings and photo-realistic cloud based renderings of your packaging design. By the end of this course, you will be able to explain and demonstrate essential Fusion 360 CAD/CAM skills and secondary life packaging. You will look at packaging in a new way – with sustainable innovations in mind.
