Why? This course does not take a position on the debate. The purpose is to benefit both sides, through identifying and clarifying the arguments of the leading Flat Earth proponents.

When engaging in a debate with a flat earther, the knee-jerk response can often be to commit a ‘straw man fallacy’. A straw man fallacy is where one misrepresents the argument of the other side of the debate in order to render the opposing position easier to defeat.

Let’s look at an example:

Globe proponents often use a meme that is often used to supposedly show how ridiculous flat earth theory is. It depicts a square flat earth floating among sphere planets. And perhaps it would be a ridiculous belief if flat earthers thought that the flat earth was, in fact, floating in space among sphere-planets.

But of course, virtually no flat earther believes this. Therefore, it really doesn’t help anyone to assume that this is an accurate representation of the flat earth theory, model or position. It just makes the person who formulates their argument around this sort of straw man construct look even sillier than the theory they were supposed to be debunking.

So let’s do away with all of that and get clear about what the Flat Earthers are actually saying and arguing. This is harder to do than you would think. Why? Because, believe it or not, actual Flat Earther beliefs are being censored at this very moment in history. This is admitted (show clip). When you search related terms in Google or Youtube, it’s virtually impossible to get anything that is NOT the standard boilerplate ‘flat earth debunk video’. If you don’t know where to look, you will absolutely never find a solid representation of flat earther arguments.

And because of this, when it comes time to debate a true flat earth advocate, you may find yourself sputtering and squirming and finding not much of substance to use against them.
