The story revolves around a teenage girl, Amina, whose family has Arab origins and immigrated to New York where they have raised their daughter. Their family has had a complicated past, but everything is settled down now. Her lenient father, Said, has a successful career as an architect, and her mother, the staunch and charismatic Akeelah, a dancer whom she has admired, finally does not feel homesick anymore and enjoys life.
However, the horizon does not look so bright after a charismatic guy, Mark, convinces her to star in a porn movie. The opinion of the Arab community becomes of great concern to her. The tension rises even more after she meets a cool guy, John, for whom she genuinely falls and their love is mutual. She must now navigate the dangers and general disappointment that may stem from the disclosure of her dirty secret. And in the process, a lot of things about their past come to light.
